St. Mary's cathedral

The first cathedral building under bishop Altfrid took place in the 9th-century. All subsequent buildings were constructed on this foundation. An air raid completely destroyed the cathedral on 22. March 1945. It was rebuilt not in Baroque style but in early Romanesque forms. World famous are the bronze casts from the time of bishop Bernward (993–1022): Bernward door (with reliefs from salvation history) and Christ column (with depiction of the life of Christ). Further treasures are the Hezilo-chandelier (Romanesque chandelier in the crossing, 'holy Jerusalem') and the late-Romanesque bronze baptismal font. The screen, which is now in the St.-Antonius-church was created by the sculptor Johann Brabender from Münster (Westphalia). Famous is also the 'thousand year old' Hildesheim rosebush at the cathedral apse. It survived the fire storm of the 2nd World War and is Hildesheim's emblem. The cathedral itself was so greatly destroyed that after it was rebuilt the then Hildesheim bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen had to consecrate the cathedral again on 26. March 1960. The Hildesheim cathedral is on UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 1985.
